Feedback/ peer assessment

http://www.facebook.com/geowatto/posts/294980947253800 Above is a link to the post on FaceBook where our film received feedback and comments from our friends. The feedback was extremely positive, which was great. The film definitely appealed to the intended target audience. Our poster for 'Charlie' also received good praise from friends, and I was really pleased with the smart, professional look of our final draft. The concept was simple but was really effective. Evaluation Task

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Goodfellas Poster analysis

'Goodfellas'. I have chosen this poster in particular because the film has a relative genre to mine, I will take influence for my poster from this, 'Snatch' and 'Love, Honour, Obey'
I can see from this poster that the creator has positioned the three main characters above the corpse laying on the road. Already i can see just by evaluating this poster briefly that the three characters have power and dominance in the film. The dark background allows the audience to see the protagonists faces but nothing else.

The font is simplistic, similar to others for this genre such as snatch and love honour obey. The simplistic font allows the image to overpower the title. The font reminds me of the font Times New Roman, a default font used to write reports, letters etc. Therefore the image below the title allows me to think that the men above the title were responsible for the crime. This creates an image that sums up the film.
The Actors playing the protagonists are written above there character, this allows the audience to determine the role of that character by their own knowledge of the actor.

Research - Sound/SFX

SFX -

I used lots of different SFX within the film. most typical of the Genre.

Here is a list off all the different effects I used:

Gunshots - Loud and impacting. Used in the climax of the narrative - well fitted to the score, really creates a strong sense of brutality and conveys a message. Timed with Visual effects (muzzle flash)

Shell casings - From the gunshots. Fits the environment well and adds a realistic feel to the gun action

Glass Smashing - Fits narrative action. Environmental damage (gun shots)

Blood 'Splats' - Used to add a sense of damage and impact. (gun shots)

Explosion - used to create impact, Dramatises the visual element - enhanced reverb to add more 'ooomph'

Research - Sound/SFX

The sound was such a key part to my film project. And at first I was insistent of sticking to a script, and focusing strongly on the dialogue within the narrative. But after watching the first draft of footage back, I decided against the use of dialogue, mainly due to the difficulty of recording the sound, This came from things such as the wind (as we filmed outside) and the distance of the characters to the microphone which was situated on the camera itself.

At this stage I had to begin researching into a score (music) that would fit the genre of the film, and still allow the audience to be able to follow the narrative. I wanted a soundtrack that didn't take away from the visual element of the film; but enhanced it. So I began researching different types/genre's of music, this ranged from Upbeat action music, to slower darker music.

Eventually I decided on using a Classical piece. The music fitted the cinematography so well, and really elevated my perception of the film. The structure of the song really worked well with the narrative of the film. The music almost builds with the film and really helps create impact. As the climactic point of the narrative draws closer, the music does also.

Research - Contemporary Gangster Films (British/Modern) / Historical etc.

Goodfellas (1990) - Martin Scorsese

I have decided to look at the narrative and cinematography aspects of Goodfellas, as I think they replicate and have influenced the overall look of my film. The films opening is a major influence on my practical film. I have based my opening on it, using similar camera shots and titles. The titles were the main thing I wanted to reflect into my film. The way in which they 'fly' in at speed gives a sense of action, and allows the audience a feel of the pace of the film. There us often a lot of movement in 'Gangster' films..be it from one location to another, or from one group of characters to their associates and so on. This is one thing which my film definitely has. there is a constant driving narrative, with inter-cutting that allow the audience to fully absorb both sides of the narrative. In this case the two groups and their experience before the climax.

Opening to Goodfellas -

The lighting is very similar too the opening scene in my film. It is dark, and this gives the film a mysterious feel, but it strongly focuses on the characters faces; which in my opinion is very important for this Genre of film. being able to see the characters facial expressions and reactions to the narrative twists and action is key, as it allows you as the viewer to relate to them as people, and be able to full understand their situation.

Digital Story Board

Joe Haddow - Director

Shot 1: ELS of street outside protagonist's house. Establishing shot of location allows the audience an insight to where the characters preside and what environment they are part of. The darkness indicates the time (early hours of the morning) which sets the scene. The un-focused style of the shot gives a 'sleepy' feel to the scene.

Shot 2: High angle shot of parents bedroom. The camera tracks through the room into the hallway where a source of light is indicated. It tracks slowly to create suspense and build up to the introduction of the the first character.

Shot 3: High angle shot of a shadow being projected onto the hallway floor. The shadow is the centre piece of the shot grabbing the viewer's attention. The camera continues to track along the floor as it slowly tilts up.

Shot 4: Camera begins to tilt upwards and the lower half of a figure is revealed. The shadow adds depth to the frame and allows the viewer to distinguish the character to an extent. Builds tension.

Shot 5: Camera continues to tilt and more of the character is revealed. The low angle shot suggests that the character is powerful. This accompanied with the dark, tense music adds to the comedic element of the scene. Which becomes clear when the character is fully revealed.

Shot 6: Over the shoulder shot establishing a new location (the characters bedroom). A second character is introduced (Reece) who is playing video games in a rather obsessive manor. The camera follows Georgie in and then cuts to Reece's perspective.

Shot 7: MLS of both the characters playing the game. They are completely focused on the TV and have such energy. This despite the time, They are really enthusiastic about winning. This however alerts the parents that they are awake when they shouldn't be. Georgie's dad then proceeds to shout through the wall at them. The camera cuts to the clock to show the audience the time. and Then the boys to show their reaction.

Shot 8: The boys clamber into bed and collapse (sleep).

Shot 9: Close up of the alarm going off on a phone. This wakes both of the characters, and they panic as they are late for School. This is the beginning of a short montage of clips that takes the viewer through the process of the characters getting ready. The pace of the editing will grab the audiences attention.

Shot 10, 11, 12: MCU of Reece as he brushes his teeth and then puts his toothbrush into the mirrored cabinet. He then shuts it and is startled by Georgie, Forcing him to gasp in a rather strange manor.

Character profiles

Reece Creedon: Playing 'Reece' in the diegesis.
Reece will play a role of a slightly dim witted character, whom which has a close friend by his side (Georgie), he is a computer game addict with a strong sense of humor, a funny character.
Reece fits this role perfectly because he is a natural when it comes to comedy, an intelligent character who also has experience playing and acting as this type of character, Reece stars in a online series called George Kempshore, also in there hit song 'The George.K Rap' with around 6,000 views on YouTube. He is confident and comfortable in front of the camera, also plays football so we will have no need to double act in the match scenes.

Spencer Creedon - Playing 'Ray Spence' in the diegesis
Spencer will play the role of a tough football coach who pushes Reece and Georgie to a standard of football high enough to compete in the local tournament. Spencer has experience on the pitch, he played for Coventry City, Gillingham FC and Dover, also coaching smaller clubs s a senior. I have chosen Spencer to take the role of the coach because of his experience and knowledge. His knowledge will also help with scripting the training montage scene.

Myself (My Partner's description and words) - will be playing 'Georgie' in the diegesis
I will play a role of a slightly dim witted character, whom which has a close friend by his side (Reece), he is a computer game addict with a strong sense of humor, a funny character, the type of character who constantly unlucky, dumb and dim. This character will work well with 'Reece' and hopefully create a partnership that creates humor.
I have experience from acting in previous productions produced by myself and partner joe. I am confident and comfortable in front and behind the camera, i also play football so we will have no need to double act in the match scenes.
